Weather forecast for multi-day boats

For the sea areas in between 20N - 10S and 60E-100E

(Issued at 07.00 a.m. on 12 December 2024, for next 24 hours)

Sea areas around the Island

The low-pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal is very likely to continue to move west-northwestwards slowly, towards the Tamil Nadu coast close to Northern Sri Lanka during the next 24 hours. Naval and fishing communities are warned not to venture to the deep and shallow sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Mullaitivu via Kankasanthurai and Mannar today (December 12).

Condition of Rain:

Showers will occur at times in the sea areas extending from Trincomalee to Puttalam via Kankasanthurai and Mannar.Showers or thundershowers will occur at a few places in the other sea areas around the island.

Winds:

Winds will be North-easterly to North-westerly in the sea areas extending from Trincomalee to Galle via Kankasanthurai and Colombo. Wind speed will be (30-40) kmph. Wind speed can increase up to (50-60) kmph at times in the sea areas extending from Trincomalee to Puttalam via Kankasanthurai and up to 50kmph in the sea areas extending from Puttalam to Galle via Colombo. Winds will be variable in direction in the other sea areas around the island and wind speed will be (25-35) kmph.

State of Sea:

The deep and shallow sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Mullaittivu via Mannar and Kankasanthurai will be rough to very rough at times and the sea areas extending from Puttalam to Galle via Colombo can be fairly rough at times. The other sea areas around the island will be moderate.

Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.

Bay of Bengal

The low-pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal is very likely to continue to move west-northwestwards slowly, towards the Tamil Nadu coast close to Northern Sri Lanka during the next 24 hours.

Fishing and naval community are requested to be attentive to future forecasts issued by the Department of Meteorology in this regard.

EQ -12N, 85E-100E        : Showers or thundershowers at several places.

Other sea areas              : Mainly fair.

Winds:

04N-18N, 80E-90E  : North-easterly to Easterly / (30-40) kmph. gusting up to 50 kmph.

EQ-05N, 80E-90E    : Westerly to North-westerly / (30-40) kmph. gusting up to 50 kmph.

Other sea areas      : North-easterly or Easterly/ (25-35) kmph.

State of the Sea:      

EQ-18N, 80E-90E    : Moderate to Fairly rough.

Other sea areas       : Slight to moderate.

Arabian Sea

Weather:

EQ- 10N, 60E-80E   : Showers or thundershowers at a few places.

Other sea areas            : Mainly fair weather.

Winds:   

05N-10N, 75E-80E    : North-westerly to Westerly / (30-40) kmph, gusting up to (50-60) kmph.

10N-20N, 60E-75E  : North-easterly / (25-35) kmph, gusting up to 45 kmph.

Other sea areas   : North-westerly or North-easterly / (25-35) kmph.

05N-10N, 75E-80E     : Moderate to fairly rough, rough at times.

10N-20N, 60E-75E  : Moderate to fairly rough.

Other sea areas      : Slight to moderate.

South Indian Ocean:

03S- 10S, 60E-100E : Showers or thundershowers at most places.

EQ- 03S, 70E-85E    : Showers or thundershowers at several places.

Other sea areas       : Showers or thundershowers at a few places.

EQ-08S, 80E-100E   : South-westerly to Westerly / (40-50) kmph; gusting up to (60 -65) kmph.

03S-10S, 70E-80E    : South-westerly / (35-45) kmph; gusting up to 55 kmph.

Other sea areas   : South-westerly or Variable/ (30-40).

State of the Sea:

EQ-08S, 80E-100E   : Fairly rough to rough, very rough at times.

03S-10S, 70E-80E    : Fairly rough to rough

Other sea areas            : Moderate, fairly rough at times.
