WEATHER FORECAST FOR 05 DECEMBER 2023

The Cyclonic storm “MICHAUNG” (PRONOUNCED AS “MIGJAUM”) over Southwest Bay of Bengal was located near latitude 13.2°N and longitude 81.2°E, at 0530hrs of 04 December and about 395 km northeast of Jaffna. The system is expected to intensify further and move northwestward away from Sri Lanka towards North Tamil Nadu coast of India. Thereafter, it would move northwards and cross South Andhra Pradesh coasts around December 05, 2023. 

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and Southern provinces.

Several spells of showers can be expected in North-western and Northern provinces.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places elsewhere after 01.00 p.m.

The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

WEATHER FORECAST FOR SEA AREAS AROUND THE ISLAND DURING NEXT 24 HOURS

The Cyclonic storm “MICHAUNG” (PRONOUNCED AS “MIGJAUM”) over Southwest Bay of Bengal was located near latitude 13.2°N and longitude 81.2°E, at 0530hrs of 04 December and about 395 km northeast of Jaffna. The system is expected to intensify further and move northwestward away from Sri Lanka towards North Tamil Nadu coast of India. Thereafter, it would move northwards and cross South Andhra Pradesh coasts around December 05, 2023. 

It is dangerous to engage in activities in the sea areas off the coast extending from Mannar to Trincomalee via Kankasanthurai. Therefore, Naval and fishing communities are advised not to venture into the above sea areas until further notice.

Naval and fishing communities are engaged in activities in the other sea areas around the island are request to be vigilant.

Fishing and naval community are requested to be attentive to future forecasts issued by the Department of Meteorology in this regard.

Condition of Rain:

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Kankasanthurai to Hambantota via Mannar, Colombo and Galle. Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the other sea areas around the island particularly during the evening or night.

Winds:

Winds will be South-westerly and wind speed will be (30-40) kmph in the sea areas around the island. Wind speed may increase up to (60-70) kmph in the sea areas off the coast extending from Mannar to Trincomalee via Kankasanthurai and up to (50-55) kmph in the other sea areas around the island.

State of Sea:

The sea areas off the coast extending from Mannar to Trincomalee via Kankasanthurai will be very rough at times.  The other sea areas around the Island can be rough at times.

Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.

The Cyclonic storm “MICHAUNG” (PRONOUNCED AS “MIGJAUM”) over Southwest Bay of Bengal has become a “severe cyclonic storm” and was located near latitude 13.5°N and longitude 80.8°E, at 1130hrs of 04 December, about 440km northeast of Jaffna. The system is expected to intensify further and move northwards away from Sri Lanka and cross South Andhra Pradesh coasts around December 05, 2023.

Tonight:

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in Western, Central, Sabaragamuwa, Southern Northern and North-western provinces. Heavy showers above 100 mm are likely at some places.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places elsewhere.

Tomorrow:

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and Southern provinces.

Several spells of showers can be expected in North-western and Northern provinces.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places elsewhere after 01.00 p.m.
