WEATHER FORECAST FOR 16 OCTOBER 2024

Prevailing heavy rainy weather in the southwestern part of the island is expected to reduced gradually from today (15th).

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in Northern provinces and in Trincomalee district, and fairly heavy showers above 50mm are likely at some places.

Several spells of showers will occur in Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-western provinces and in Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara-eliya districts.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places elsewhere during the evening or night.

The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

WEATHER FORECAST FOR SEA AREAS AROUND THE ISLAND DURING NEXT 24 HOURS

Issued at 12.00 noon on 15 October 2024.

Naval and fishing communities are advised not to venture into the deep and shallow sea areas extending from Batticaloa to Mannar via Trincomalee and Kankasanturai, until October 17.
Condition of Rain:
Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the sea areas around the island.
Winds:

Winds will be south-westerly and speed will be (30-40) kmph.

Wind speed can increase up to (60-65) kmph at times in the sea areas off the coasts extending from Galle to Mannar via Hambantota, Batticaloa, Trincomalee and, Kankasanthurai.

Wind speed can increase up to 50 kmph at times in the other sea areas around the island.

State of Sea:

The sea areas off the coasts extending from Galle to Mannar via Hambantota, Batticaloa, Trincomalee and, Kankasanthurai can be very rough at times. The other sea areas around the island can be rough at times.

The wave height (about 2.5–3.0 m) (this is not for land area) may increase in the sea areas off the coast extending from Chilaw to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota.

Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.
