WEATHER FORECAST FOR MULTI-DAY BOATS

For the sea areas in between 20N - 10S and 60E-100E

(Issued at 07.00 a.m. on 04 December 2023, for next 24hours)

Sea areas around the Island

The Cyclonic storm “MICHAUNG” (PRONOUNCED AS “MIGJAUM”) over Southwest Bay of Bengal was located near latitude 12.8°N and longitude 81.6°E, at 2330hrs of 03 December and about 365 km northeast of Jaffna. The system is expected to intensify further and move northwestward away from Sri Lanka towards North Tamil Nadu coast of India. Thereafter, it would move northwards and cross South Andhra Pradesh coasts around December 05, 2023.

It is dangerous to engage in activities in the sea areas off the coast extending from Mannar to Trincomalee via Kankasanthurai. Therefore, Naval and fishing communities are advised not to venture into the above sea areas until further notice.

Naval and fishing communities are engaged in activities in the other sea areas around the island are request to be vigilant.

Fishing and naval community are requested to be attentive to future forecasts issued by the Department of Meteorology in this regard.

Condition of Rain:

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Kankasanthurai to Hambantota via Mannar, Colombo and Galle. Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the other sea areas around the island particularly during the evening or night.

Winds:

Winds will be South-westerly and wind speed will be (30-40) kmph in the sea areas around the island. Wind speed may increase up to (60-70) kmph in the sea areas off the coast extending from Mannar to Trincomalee via Kankasanthurai and up to (50-55) kmph in the other sea areas around the island.

State of Sea:

The sea areas off the coast extending from Mannar to Trincomalee via Kankasanthurai will be very rough at times.  The other sea areas around the Island can be rough at times.

Bay of Bengal

05N - 18N, 80E-88E : Anticlockwise / (50-60) kmph, gusting up to (70-80) kmph.

05N-15N, 88E-100E: Easterly to South-easterly / (20-30) kmph, gusting up to (40-50) kmph.

EQ- 05N, 80E-90E    : South-easterly to South-westerly/ (20-30) kmph, gusting up to 40 kmph.

Other sea areas      : South-easterly or Variable / (10-20) kmph.

State of the Sea:

05N - 18N, 80E-88E : Rough to very rough, high at times.

05N-15N, 88E-100E : Moderate to fairly rough, rough at times.

EQ- 05N, 80E-90E    : Moderate.

Other sea areas      : Slight to moderate.

Arabian Sea

Weather:

EQ- 10N, 60E-70E:Showers or thundershowers over most places.

10N- 15N, 60E-70E  :Showers or thundershowers at several places.

Other sea areas      : Showers or thundershowers at a few places.

Winds:

EQ-06N, 60E-68E : South-westerly / (30-40) kmph, gusting up to (50-60) kmph.

15N-20N, 60E-70E               : North-easterly / (30-40) kmph, gusting up to 50 kmph.

EQ-10N, 70E-80E     : South-westerly to North-westerly / (20-30) kmph, gusting up to 40 kmph.

Other sea areas      : North-easterly to North-westerly / (10-20) kmph.   

State of the Sea:

EQ-06N, 60E-68E : Fairly rough, rough at times.

15N-20N, 60E-70E           : Moderate to fairly rough.

EQ-10N, 70E-80E     : Moderate.

Other sea areas      : Slight to moderate.

South Indian Ocean:

Weather: 

03S -08S, 85E-100E : Showers or thundershowers at several places.

Other sea areas      : Showers or thundershowers at a few places.

05S-10S, 60E-100E  : South-easterly / (30-40) kmph, gusting up to 50 kmph.

EQ-05S, 70E-90E     : South-easterly / (20-30) kmph.

Other sea areas      : South-easterly or Variable / (10-20) kmph.

State of the Sea:

05S-10S, 60E-100E  : Moderate to fairly rough.

Other sea areas      : Slight.

**Temporary strong gusty winds and rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.
