WEATHER FORECAST FOR 17th NOVEMBER 2018

The Cyclonic storm ‘GAJA’ over the Southwest Bay of Bengal further moved westwards and located near latitude-10.4N, Longitude-78.5E at 08.30a.m. on 16th November 2018 approximately 180 km away from Kankasanturai to the northwest of Sri Lanka.

The system is very likely to move westwards and weaken gradually into a deep depression during next 03 hours.

The system is moving away from the country. Hence windy and showery condition in the Northern part of the island and Northern sea area is expected to reduce gradually from today(16) evening.

 

Showers or thundershowers will occur Central, Sabaragamuwa, North-central, Western and Uva provinces after 2.00p.m.

Light showers can be expected in the Eastern and Northern provinces in the morning.

Fairly heavy showers above 75 mm may occur at some places in and Sabaragamuwa, Central and Uva provinces.

Misty conditions may occur at some places in the Central, Sabaragamuwa and Western provinces during the morning.

There may be temporary localized strong winds during thundershowers. General public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by lightning activity.

WEATHER FORECAST FOR SEA AREAS AROUND THE ISLAND DURING

NEXT 24 HOURS (Issued at 1200 noon on 16th November2018)

Sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Kankasanturai via Mannar can be rough at times as the wind speed can increase up to 60 kmph during next 12 hours.

Fishermen are advised not to venture into sea areas off coast extending from Mullaitivu to Puttalam via Kankasanturai and Mannar during next 12 hours.

Showers or thundershowers will occur in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Kankasanturai via Mannar.

Winds will be Southerly or South-easterly and speed will be 40-50 kmph in the deep sea area extending from Puttalam to Kankasanturai via Mannar from tomorrow morning. Winds will be South-westerly or variable over other sea areas around the island and speed will be 20-30 kmph.

WEATHER FORECAST FOR NEXT 36 HOURS

(ISSUED AT 1600 HOURS ON 15th NOVEMBER 2018)

The Severe Cyclonic storm ‘GAJA’ over the Central Bay of Bengal is now located approximately 265km away from Kankasanturai to the northeast of Sri Lanka, near latitude-11.2N, Longitude-82.0E at 11.30a.m. on 15th November. It is very likely to move west-southwestwards.

The system is expected to cross South Tamil Nadu coast and the center of the system is very likely to move approximately 120km away from the northern coast of Sri Lanka during today (15th) evening.

 

The system is likely to move away from the country by tomorrow (16th). Hence windy and showery condition in the Northern part of the island and Northern sea area is expected to reduce gradually from tomorrow evening.

 

Sea water inundation may occur in the low lying areas in the near coast from Mannar to Kankasanturai.

 

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times over the Northern province. Very heavy falls above 150mm can be expected in the Jaffna peninsula and in Killinochchi district during tonight and tomorrow. Heavy falls above 100mm can be expected in other areas in the Northern province.

Several spells of showers will occur in Anuradhapura and Puttalam districts.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in Central, Sabaragamuwa and Uva provinces after 2.00.p.m.

High winds (70-80) kmph, gusting up to 100kmph can be expected over Northern province, particularly over the Jaffna peninsula.

Strong winds (50-60) kmph, gusting up to 70kmph can be expected over Puttalam and Anuradhapura districts.

Misty conditions may occur at some places in the Central, Sabaragamuwa and Western provinces during the morning.
