WEATHER FORECAST FOR SEA AREAS AROUND THE ISLAND DURING NEXT 24 HOURS

Issued at 1200 noon on 09 December 2022

 

The Cyclonic Storm “Mandous” over Southwest Bay of Bengal was located 230km east-northeast of Jaffna near latitude 11.1N and longitude 81.5E at 08.30am today (09). This system is very likely to move northwestwards and cross North Tamil-Nadu, Puducherry and South Andhra Pradesh coast over Southwest Bay of Bengal around night hours of 09th December.

 

Under the influence of this system, the deep and shallow sea areas of northern and eastern coast will be very rough to high with very strong gusty winds and heavy rain.

There is a possibility of swell waves increasing up to (2.5 – 3.5) m in the sea areas off the coast extending from Kankasanturai to Batticaloa via Trincomalee and swell waves can increase up to (2.0 – 2.5) m  in the sea areas off the coast extending from Galle to Batticaloa via Hambanthota and Pottuvil .

Naval and fishing communities are advised not to venture into the deep and shallow sea areas off the coast extending from Mannar to Pottuvil via Kankasanturai, Trincomalee & Batticaloa, Southwest Bay of Bengal (07N - 15N, 80E – 86E) and Southern Sea areas (02N - 06N, 78E – 86E), until further notice.

Fishing and naval community are requested to be attentive to future forecasts issued by the Department of Meteorology in this regard.

Condition of Rain:
Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the sea areas around the island.
Winds:
Winds will be westerly or south-westerly. Wind speed will be (40-50) kmph and gusting up to (60-70) kmph at times over the sea area extending from Kankasanturai to Batticaloa via Trincomalee and over the sea area extending from Colombo to  Hambanthota  via  Galle. Wind speed will be (30-40) kmph and gusting up to (50-60) kmph at times in the other sea areas around the island.
State of Sea:
The sea areas off the coast extending from Kankasanturai to Batticaloa via Trincomalee and over the sea area extending from Colombo to Hambanthota via  Galle will be very rough at times. The other sea areas around the island will be rough at times.
