WEATHER FORECAST FOR 02nd DECEMBER 2020

The deep depression is expected to intensify futher in to a cyclonic strom and very likely to cross Sri Lanka. Due to this situation the rainy and windy condition is expected to enhance considerably over the island.

The depression area in the south-east Bay of Bengal has concentrated into a deep depression and lay centered 500 km southeast to Trincomalee at 1130 hrs today (01st December). The system is very likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm during the next 24 hours.

The system is very likely to move west-northwestwards and cross eastern coast of Sri Lanka between Batticaloa and Point-Pedro around tomorrow (02nd December) evening/night.

Intemittent showers/thundershowers will occur in the Eastern, Northern, Northern-central, North-western ,Central and Sabaragamuwa provinces.

Very heavy rainfall above 200mm can be expected at some places.

Showers or thundershowers at times will occur elsewhere. Heavy rainfall above 100mm can be expected at some places.

Very strong gusty winds (80-90) kmph can be expected in Northern, North-Central, Eastern, North-Western, Western, Central and Sabaragamuwa provinces.

Strong gusty winds (60-70) kmph can be expected elsewhere.

WEATHER FORECAST FOR SEA AREAS AROUND THE ISLAND DURING NEXT 24 HOURS

Issued at 12.00 noon on 01 December 2020

 

The depression area in the south-east Bay of Bengal has concentrated into a deep depression  and lay centered 500 km southeast to Trincomalee at 1130hrs today (01st December). The system is very likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm during the next 24 hours.

 

The system is very likely to move west-northwestwards and cross eastern coast of Sri Lanka between Batticaloa and Point-Pedro around tomorrow (02nd December) evening/night.

 

As such,  intemittent showers/thundershowers, strong or very strong gusty winds and rough or very rough seas can be expected  in the sea areas  in between 05N-12N, 82E-92E during next few days.

 

Naval and fishing communities are advised not to venture into the deep ans shallow-sea areas over the island until further notice.

 

Fishing and naval community are requested to be attentive about future bulletins issued by the Department of Meteorology in next few days.

 

Condition of Rain:

Intermittent showers or thundershowers will occur in the deep and shallow sea areas extending from  Kankasanthurai to Pottuvil via Trincomalee and Batticaloa.Very heavy showers can be expected some places in the above sea areas. Showers will occur at times elsewhere.

 

Winds:

Winds will be north-easterly in the sea areas around the island and the wind speed will be (40-50) kmph. The wind speed can increase up to (80-90)kmph at times over deep sea area extending from Puttalam to Hambantota  via Mannar, Kankasanthurai,Trincomalee and Pottuvil and the  wind speed can increase up to (60-70)kmph at times over the other sea areas.

 

State of Sea:

The sea areas around the island will be fairly rough. The deep sea areas extending from Kankasanthurai to Pottuvil via Trincomalee can be very rough or high at times. The deep sea areas extending from Galle to Puttalm via Colombo can be very rough at times.

There is a possibility that near shore sea areas off the coast extending from Kankesanthurai to Pottuvil via Trincomalee and Batticaloa may experience surges due to the effect of swell waves, having (2.0-3.0) m height.
